This file contains the daily political diaries of the Political Agent in Muscat. It includes information categorised under the condition of the country, arrivals and departures of ships, movement of British representatives, missionary enterprises, aviation and other subheadings. Many of the events recorded pertain to exchanges and visits between leading notables and merchants of Oman and the Gulf and their relations to the Sultan of Muscat and Oman.

This file contains correspondence related to the maintenance and condition of the three Christian (or European) cemeteries in Muscat. The majority of the correspondence in the file is internal correspondence between British officials, but the file also contains correspondence between the Political Agency in Muscat and external entities including a contractor in India (concerning the purchase of chain for use as railing in a cemetery); Dirk Dykstra of the American Mission in Muscat; and the Ministry [naẓārah] of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman. The correspondence with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs relates to a stolen tombstone being used as flooring in a residence near Matrah, two of these letters are in Arabic (accompanied by English translations). In addition to correspondence, the file contains a plan of the Catholic Cemetery near the American Mission in Muscat (folio 16).

Genre/Subject Matter: Two official photographs of the Sultan of Muscat and Oman, Āl Sa‘īd, Sa‘īd ibn Taymūr, during his visit to England in 1938. The photographs were taken on April 1 and April 4 respectively. The visit was part of the Sultan’s world tour 1937–38. Each photograph was taken by a separate press agency.

Correspondence, memoranda, and minutes relating to relations between the Sultan of Muscat and other powers, including the British. Included in the file: numerous notes and reports by the Political Agent in Muscat on the Sultan's relations with the Americans (folio 3), the tribes of the interior of Oman (folios 25-31 and 39-47), and the British officers themselves (folios 7 and 34-37) correspondence from the Sultan of Muscat, Said bin Taimur [Sa‘īd ibn Taymūr Āl Bū Sa‘īd] regarding the trade in dates and his desire that no official correspondence of such matters be exchanged or retained (folios 13-15) an extract from Muscat Intelligence Summary No. 2, 1-15 January 1940, regarding the Muscat government's public notices prohibiting trade with Germany.

Correspondence relating to the activities of Sheikh Sulaiman Pasha al Baruni (also written Suleiman) [Sulayman al-Barūnī al-Nufūsi], an exiled notable of Tripoli appointed to the Muscat State Government. The file includes correspondence between officials at the Political Agency in Muscat, Political Residency in the Persian Gulf, Government of India (External Affairs Department), India Office and Foreign Office discussing the appointment of al Baruni as Adviser for Internal Affairs and Inspector of Walis and the suspected reasons behind it. Also contained within the file are translations of intercepted letters to and from al Baruni to various members of the exiled Tripolitanian community between 17 September 1939 and 20 March 1940. The correspondence discusses the situation in Tripolitania, the position of the Italians in the Second World War, the formation of committees and the elections of leaders, and the possibility of liberating their homeland. Correspondents include: Syed Ahmad Zarim (Salambo, Ahwaj, Tunis) The French Minister and Resident-General at Tunis Syed Omar Faiq Shunaib, a notable of Tripoli (As-Salhiyah, Damascus) Sheikh Ahmed Beg al Baruni, Qadhi of Yafrin (Tripoli) Ahmad Zari Ar-Rihaibi (Tripoli) Omar Faiq Shanib (Damascus) Ahmad Zarim bin Khalifah bin Omar (Salambo, Tunis) Syed Muhammad Ariqi, President of the Association of Tripolian Immigrants in Tunis Present within the file are translated letters and statements with multiple signatures of the 'chiefs and sheikhs' of Tripoli residing in Egypt declaring their intention to form a committee and elect a president (folios 15-17).

Fortnightly news summaries sent by the Political Agent, Muscat, to the Political Residency in the Persian Gulf and distributed from there to various other British and Indian Government offices. From 1 April 1934 they are referred to as intelligence summaries. The reports cover various subjects, each given their own sub-heading, such as British interests, aviation, local interests, foreign interests, meteorological, shipping, Royal Air Force, Navy, and miscellaneous. Events of note are sometimes given their own sub-heading within a report. Most of the reports cover a period of two weeks but occasionally they may cover a month or more. The earliest report is that of the period 1 to 15 August 1933 and the last is 16 to 31 October 1945. There are the following gaps: 16 December 1934 to 31 March 1935 16 to 31 December 1940 1 December 1941 to 15 January 1942 1 to 15 December 1942 1 to 15 June 1943 1 to 15 October 1944 Also contained within the file are India Office notes on sections of interest for some of the reports.

The file consists of correspondence regarding an invitation to participate in an International Exhibition at Rome in 1942, issued by the Italian Legation at Baghdad to the Government of the Sultan of Muscat. Correspondents include: the India Office; the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; and the Political Agent and Consul, Muscat. Also includes: a copy in translation of the original invitation from the Italian Legation at Baghdad dated 16 November 1938, with details for the exhibition; and a draft reply on behalf of the Sultan of Muscat [Sa‘īd bin Taymūr]. The file includes a divider which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.

The file contains correspondence relating to the celebrations to be held in Portugal in 1939 and 1940 of the eighth centenary of the foundation of the Portuguese Nation and the third centenary of the re-establishment of Portuguese independence. It mainly consists of copies sent to the India Office of correspondence between the Foreign Office and the following: the Ministry of Information, the British Council, the Universities Bureau of the British Council, and Dr Armindo R Monteiro, Portuguese Embassy; regarding the Congress of the Portuguese World to be held in Portugal in 1940. It also includes correspondence between the following: the Foreign Office and the Under Secretary of State for India; the India Office and the Government of India, External Affairs Department; and the Political Resident in Persian Gulf and the Government of India, External Affairs Department; concerning the request by the Portuguese Ambassador for assistance in securing from the authorities at Muscat the loan of suitable objects for inclusion in an exhibition to be organised in connection with the celebrations. The file includes a copy of a memorandum in French from the Portuguese Ambassador to London, dated 23 May 1938 (folio 24-25).
