This paper examines Touiza, an ancestral socio-cultural practice of collective work and mutual aid from Algeria, tracing its evolution from a traditional foundation of communal life to a modern form of civic activism. Often translated as solidarity or communal work, Touiza is a living practice that continues to shape social relations and is being actively reimagined by contemporary actors. By analyzing its foundational principles and examining its modern applications, this paper argues that Touiza serves not only as a potent vehicle for reinforcing social solidarity but also as a blueprint for an authentic, equitable, and sustainable model of mountain tourism. This approach stands in contrast to extractive or mass-market tourism, instead proposing a model where cultural integrity, community empowerment, and environmental stewardship are paramount. Through a deconstruction of the concept of Touiza, an exploration of its role in fostering modern solidarity and local governance, and an analysis of case studies, this paper illustrates its tangible potential to transform the mountain tourism landscape in Algeria.

This study examines women’s voluntary work in the Mozabite community, exploring whether it is an individual initiative or a cultural and religious tradition. Field research was conducted through interviews with women volunteers from the “Tamsiridin” organization, chosen as a model for this study. The findings reveal that this organisation forms the core of women’s voluntary work in the community. It transformed women’s voluntary work from isolated individual acts into an institutional and social practice that was once exclusively for men. Thanks to the "Tamsiridin" organization, women have gained the opportunity to assert their presence as active and productive members of society. Women now contribute to the construction, stability, and continuity of the social system alongside men.

This article takes as its geographical context the M’Zab, a region known for its social, doctrinal and historical particularities, but also for its own institutional organisation. These institutions include tiskra/tiskriwin, the traditional version of neighbourhood committees that have been adapted to modern forms of association. The aim is therefore to look back at these neighbourhood committees, their origins, their organisation and their role in a Mozabite town. The research underscores the integral role of tiskriwin in promoting local solidarity and cultural continuity in the M’Zab valley. Despite evolving under national policies, these associations retain traditional wisdom and community support, ensuring their ongoing relevance in neighbourhood governance and social cohesion. To achieve this, in addition to documentary research, we carried out field surveys. The survey took place mainly in the ksar of Ghardaïa, with some return visits to the town of Béni Isguen. The aim was to find out how these tiskriwin were structured and managed, and what roles they fulfilled. By analysing all these sources, interviews and documents, we were able to understand how the tiskriwin were organised and what role they played within their communitites.
