Ce travail s’inscrit dans une problématique qui soulève la question des pratiques d’une société qui a su préserver son patrimoine vernaculaire et qui tente de le perpétuer. Ce dernier est constitué par les ksour, la forme d’habitat traditionnel au Sahara algérien. Datant de l’époque médiévale, ce patrimoine regroupe les cinq cités de la Pentapole de la vallée du M’zab, une contrée où habite une population musulmane ibadite formant une minorité religieuse. Dans cet endroit, la façon de construire d’autrefois, qui s’articule sur une organisation sociale basée sur l’intime et le sacré, n’a pas laissé insensibles de grands bâtisseurs, comme Le Corbusier, qui s’en est épris. D’ailleurs, c’est pour éterniser ce type de patrimoine et veiller à sa préservation que la vallée du M’zab a pu être inscrite sur la liste des biens communs de l’humanité et classée en secteur sauvegardé. Mais comme partout, en Algérie, la vallée du M’zab n’a pas échappé à la frénésie des constructions qui s’est emparée des agglomérations de ce pays, depuis son Indépendance. Stimulée par une explosion démographique extrêmement forte, cette frénésie a eu des conséquences qui ont grandement éprouvé la vallée du M’zab, d’où un espace urbain transgressé par des extensions qui ne répondent pas à la vocation du site, mais sans toutefois réussir à désagréger la pérennité d’une organisation sociale que le mode de vie a bien préservée. Ces deux aspects ne sont pas susceptibles de disparaître, parce que la société mozabite a conscience que leur présence est le seul gage de son maintien. Évidemment, la conservation de pratiques anciennes ne veut absolument pas dire que cette société répugne à la modernité, car elle y puise ce qui l’aide à être de son temps, et sans avoir à altérer ses valeurs patrimoniales. Ainsi, en voulant résoudre un problème, celui résultant de la crise du logement, la communauté a eu pour stratégie l’adoption d’une nouvelle manière de produire l’urbain, celle qui s’ingénie à perpétuer son patrimoine ancien, qu’il soit matériel ou immatériel, mais en le projetant dans une perspective novatrice reposant sur des pratiques ancrées dans des valeurs séculaires, et en puisant dans la modernité ce qui lui paraît essentiel à ses besoins et à sa durabilité.

This research concerning the cooking pottery production in late roman time in the Island of Pantelleria, located in the Sicily Channel.This coarse ware consisted in pans, pots, casseroles and lids and large jars, useful to cook food and other raw materials as bitumen and pitch. This high refractoriness is given to the ceramic mixture by the vulcanic minerals peculiars form the clay of the island. The archaeological excavations conducted until now, discovered a large settlement in the Scauri Bay placed in the S-W coast of the island, datable from the second half of the IV to the end of the V century. The village based its economical activity on the cooking pottery production and its export, as evidenced by the shipwreck in the harbor of Scauri. The pottery materials found in the site and in the shipwreck, come from reliable contexts and it has been helpful to a thorough tipological and chronological study of this local ware production. The analysis of the attestations in the Central and Western Mediterranean, through the bibliography and some unpublished datas from Sicily, led to create some circulation maps across the centuries. This has allowed me to make some considerations and conclusions. It has been possible to realize a diachronic study, to distinguish forms and types from the III cent. B.C. to the V cent. A.D.. The pottery had a wide circulation in the Mediterranean, mostly from the second half of the IV to the beginning of the VI century.

The Italo-Turkish War (1911-1912), now remembered primarily as Italy’s war for what is now Libya, swelled from a localized colonial invasion into a significant Mediterranean conflict and a global cause cï¿½lï¿½bre that attracted support and aid for the embattled Ottoman regime from diverse locations both inside and outside the borders of the empire. This dissertation examines the means by which the Ottoman Empire erected an asymmetric defense of its last North African provinces to preserve its territory and empire from Italian occupation and annexation. Drawing on sources in Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, Greek, and Judeo-Spanish, this study demonstrates how the Sublime Porte and the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) initially deployed a rhetoric of unity, constitutionalism, and international law to protect the empire from the Italian invasion. Due to the efficacy of Italian diplomacy, the Ottomans, unable to enlist Great Power support for the preservation of imperial territory, developed a defensive strategy for its North African territories that relied primarily on humanitarianism and volunteerism. This dissertation, therefore, investigates the vital contribution of pan-Islamism and the broad appeal of a loose ideology of Muslim anticolonialism in the empire’s attempts to bolster its forces with international aid and volunteers. While many studies tend to brush aside the importance of early twentieth-century pan-Islamism as either a pipe dream of Wilhelmine champions of German imperialism and their Ottoman collaborators or as merely a rhetorical movement devoid of substantial consequence, this dissertation reveals how global appeals to Islamic unity to combat European expansionism translated into material benefits for Ottomans on the battlefield. Through an examination of documents from the Turkish Red Crescent and the Turkish General Staff archives, it highlights the crucial assistance of global Islamic humanitarian aid to the Ottoman war effort in the form of sizeable financial contributions to the Ottoman Red Crescent from Muslims over the duration of the conflict. The Red Crescent organization provided a means to funnel aid to the battlefield collected in mosques, mass meetings, newspaper subscriptions, and Islamic associations within and without the Ottoman Empire. This charitable aid facilitated the deployment to North Africa of multiple Red Crescent teams which assumed, in most cases, sole responsibility for the medical care of both soldiers and civilians of the Ottoman provinces. Simultaneously, the Ottoman ranks in Tripolitania and Cyrenaica swelled as calls for coreligionist volunteers to take up arms were heeded throughout Africa and Asia. Ultimately, the empire’s anticolonial ideology proved an effective unifier for the many Muslims around the world who shouldered a great deal of the cost of the conflict. While Italy’s expenses for its war for colonial expansion ballooned, the defense of North Africa cost the Ottoman treasury very little.
