The ancient oasis of Salut, located on the desert's fringes in the heart of the Oman Peninsula, not far from the modern cities of Nizwa and Bahla, is distinguished by its rich archaeological landscape, which the Italian Mission to Oman has been investigating for more than ten years. The impressive Iron Age site of Husn Salut was the focus of the coeval settlement of the area, and in all likelihood it was also a key site at the regional level. Founded in the second half of the second millennium BC, Husn Salut was a place for public gatherings which also entailed a degree of rituality, an aspect enhanced by its monumental architecture, merging, as it does, with the location on top of a small hill which dominated the surrounding plain and made the site visible from the distance. Agricultural exploitation of the plain, made possible by a sophisticated water management, stood at the basis of the site' s subsistence. The site was largely abandoned after almost one millennium of continuous settlement, probably around 300 BC, with some evidence indicating a possible later date. While the investigation of the associated settlement of Qaryat Salut is just started, this book provides a general overview of the excavation at Husn Salut and its results, together with an exhaustive discussion of its material culture, with a specific attention paid to the pottery assemblage from selected, highly significant stratigraphic sequences. The site' s chronology is also specifically addressed, as an array of radiocarbon determinations, which, when considered together with the associated material culture, indicate its fundamental relevance in the discussion about the chrono-cultural phasing of the Early Iron Age of South East Arabia

Madeleine Mesure (Lille 1906 - Toulouse 1978) y Marie Claver (Compiègne 1890 - Toulouse 1985) fueron dos misioneras de nuestra Señora de África, “hermanas blancas”, que desarrollaron su labor en el Sáhara argelino. La primera permaneció entre 1930 y 1961 y tenía buenos conocimientos del árabe literal y argelino. La segunda de ellas desde 1914 hasta 1970, conocía muy bien el árabe argelino y literal y aprendió el amacige de los mozabíes. El original de la obra que editamos se encuentra en la Casa General de las Hermanas Blancas en Roma. Su contenido es, sobre todo, léxico, pero contiene también fraseología en árabe argelino e indicaciones y explicaciones en francés, después de los nombres en árabe argelino, sobre, por ejemplo, el tratamiento de enfermedades con plantas autóctonas, la ceremonia nupcial o el funcionamiento del telar. En su conjunto, podemos decir que es una descripción bastante amplia de la vida de las mujeres y hombres en el Sáhara argelino a partir de su variedad árabe y, en menor medida, amacige. Zanzibari Muslim Moderns is a historical study of Zanzibar during the interwar years. This was a period marked by rapid intellectual and social change in the Muslim world, when ideas of Islamic progress and development were hotly debated. How did this process play out in Zanzibar? Based on a wide range of sources—Islamic and colonial, private and public—Anne K. Bang examines how these concepts were received and promoted on the island, arguing that a new ideal emerged in its intellectual arena: the Muslim modern. Tracing the influences that shaped the outlook of this new figure, Bang draws lines to Islamic modernists in the Middle East, to local Sufi teachings, and to the recently founded state of Saudi Arabia. She presents the activities of the Muslim modern in the colonial employment system, as a contributor to international debates, as an activist in the community, and more. She also explores the formation of numerous faith-based associations during this period, as well as the views of the Muslim modern on everything from funerary practices and Mawlid celebrations to reading habits. A recurring theme throughout is the question with which many Muslim moderns were confronted: who should implement development? And for whom?

Zanzibar Was a Country traces the history of a Swahili-speaking Arab diaspora from East Africa to Oman. In Oman today, whole communities in Muscat speak Swahili, have recent East African roots, and practice forms of sociality associated with the urban culture of the Swahili coast. These "Omani Zanzibaris" offer the most significant contemporary example in the Gulf, as well as in the wider Indian Ocean region, of an Afro-Arab community that maintains a living connection to Africa in a diasporic setting. While they come from all over East Africa, a large number are postrevolution exiles and emigrés from Zanzibar. Their stories provide a framework for the broader transregional entanglements of decolonization in Africa and the Arabian Gulf. Using both vernacular historiography and life histories of men and women from the community, Nathaniel Mathews argues that the traumatic memories of the Zanzibar Revolution of 1964 are important to nation-building on both sides of the Indian Ocean.

Le thème proposé par l’université de Lorraine pour le congrès de la SHMESP en 2014 a eu pour objet la place du modèle dans la transmission médiévale des savoirs, qu’il s’agisse des connaissances intellectuelles, des savoir-faire dans la production des objets, des normes de comportement ou encore des modèles de vie religieuse. Dans ces différents champs, la question du modèle apparaît comme un prisme de l’enquête historique, dans le sens où la transmission des savoirs s’appuie très largement et concurremment sur l’exemplarité et sur la reproduction. Le modèle peut être une personne éminente ou exceptionnelle, la synthèse d’un ensemble d’observations et d’expériences, qui permettent à un individu ou un groupe de construire son savoir, son savoir-faire ou son savoir-être. Le geste, l’image, la parole, l’écrit apparaissent donc comme autant de supports de la transmission. Dans le domaine de l’histoire de la culture matérielle, cette perspective peut mener à s’interroger sur les modalités et les supports de la transmission des savoir-faire. Elle peut aussi conduire à mettre en évidence la place du modèle et celle du patron dans la production : il peut s’agir du geste ou de l’image que l’on imite, mais aussi d’objets spécifiques qui peuvent faire fonction de prototypes, parfois en vue d’une répétition presque mécanisée. Dans le domaine de l’étude des comportements, la notion de modèle apparaît comme une voie d’enquête fructueuse. Elle se double de la notion d’exemplarité : celle-ci est particulièrement visible dans la figure du bon évêque ou du bon prince, ou encore dans la diffusion des modèles hagiographiques, spéculaires ou tropologiques (éthique philosophique, allégorie, littérature des exempla, consolations, etc.). De la même manière, la littérature, qu’elle soit spirituelle, morale, historique ou romanesque, et les disciplines philosophiques qui englobent tous les artes, véhiculent des modèles ou se réclament d’autorités livresques, religieuses, mythologiques ou philosophiques. Au Moyen Âge, toute œuvre, toute production et toute action a ses références et ses sources, qu’il importe à l’historien de découvrir et d’interpréter.
