Studies of trans-Saharan trade have recently been revitalized, mainly through an exploration of local archives. These archives offer a further possibility: to investigate the link between local settlement and wider patterns of exchange. Material from southern Algeria and northern Mali suggests that oases were not viable without outside investment, that pastoral economies needed storage space and agricultural produce, and that intra-Saharan and trans-Saharan trade relied on each other. Hence, regional mobility and outside connections were not subsidiary but constitutive of the local, and local patterns of production and trans-Saharan commerce were aspects of the same system.

With the Rustamids' rise to power, commerce and trade in Maghrib had prominent growth during 2nd and 3rd century AH/8th and 9th century AD. Tahret (Tiaret) the center of Rustamids could compete commercially with most of the civilized cities of that period. This superiority and prosperity was due to the extensive trade, consequent on Tahert proper geographical position, locating in the trading mainland, plentitude of markets and commercial centers, and special attention paid by Rustamids to the trade besides expansive immigration of merchants, craftsmen, scholars and students. Commercial relations with Sudan, Andalusia and local states of Maghrib region accelerated the commercial growth and Tahert blossomed more. The purpose of this research is to study Rustamids' commercial and economic policy and their mercantile relations while depicting the commercial situation of Tahert in aforementioned era.

North African Jews constitute the second largest Jewish Diaspora group. However, their relatedness to each other; to European, Middle Eastern, and other Jewish Diaspora groups; and to their former North African non-Jewish neighbors has not been well defined. Here, genome-wide analysis of five North African Jewish groups (Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, Djerban, and Libyan) and comparison with other Jewish and non-Jewish groups demonstrated distinctive North African Jewish population clusters with proximity to other Jewish populations and variable degrees of Middle Eastern, European, and North African admixture. Two major subgroups were identified by principal component, neighbor joining tree, and identity-by-descent analysis—Moroccan/Algerian and Djerban/Libyan—that varied in their degree of European admixture. These populations showed a high degree of endogamy and were part of a larger Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jewish group. By principal component analysis, these North African groups were orthogonal to contemporary populations from North and South Morocco, Western Sahara, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. Thus, this study is compatible with the history of North African Jews—founding during Classical Antiquity with proselytism of local populations, followed by genetic isolation with the rise of Christianity and then Islam, and admixture following the emigration of Sephardic Jews during the Inquisition.

In the climax of the Algerian war of independence (1954-1962) a variety of international parties, including officials in France, Algeria, and Israel, fought to gain control over documentation of and about a small Jewish community in the Algerian Sahara. This essay considers why decolonization radically changed the fate of the papers of a community long fetishized as marginal by social scientists, policy makers, and the demographic bulk of North African Jewry. To do so, it looks back to a history of colonial law that segmented southern Algerian Jewry off from Jews of the north and explores the fierce archival battle, a component of the Algerian war of independence, over who would control the documents of Algeria’s past. Finally, this article reaches into the present day, probing how documents of the North African and Middle Eastern past continue to be used to serve various, conflicting nationalist agendas. All told, this research teaches that when it comes to studying Algerian Jewish history, the historian inevitably bumps up against an active and highly politicized, multi-party contest over the sources of the Jewish past — one laced through with the complex history of Jews’ relationship to the colonial and postcolonial order, and, indeed, power itself.

Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca (1490-1557), hidalgo de la meilleure noblesse espagnole, est l’auteur d’une relation de voyage très significativement intitulée Naufragios (1542) qui constitue le coeur de cette thèse intitulée : "Un conquistador à la découverte de l’autre : Les Naufragios d’Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca". Elle vise à démontrer que le caractère exceptionnel de ce texte réside tout autant dans son contenu que dans la personne de son auteur, brutalement et bien malgré lui confronté au choc de l’altérité, du fait d’une immersion involontaire, prolongée et totale parmi différentes ethnies de l’actuel continent nord-américain. À son retour en Europe, il retranscrit dans un mémoire les différentes étapes de cette découverte et de sa prise de conscience de l’humanité pleine et entière des Indiens, cet "autre" qu’il évoque longuement après l’avoir attentivement observé. Pour Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca, les Indiens sont en tous points ses semblables, des hommes qu’il convient de traiter comme tels et dont il devient, contre toute attente, l’ardent défenseur devant la plus haute autorité temporelle et spirituelle d’Espagne, le Roi. Son texte, à la qualité littéraire inclassable, ne relate pourtant pas une aventure unique. C’est à lui cependant qu’il doit sa postérité. Considéré tour à tour comme le premier écrivain américain, un ethnologue avant l’heure ou comme le premier défenseur authentique des Indiens, Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca, à l’issue d’un périple de près de 10 ans au cours duquel il a parcouru le continent américain d’Est en Ouest connaît la déchéance sociale et n’a pas vu ses idées triompher de son vivant.

La dynamique et les mutations qu’a connue la région de Ouargla peuvent se lire à travers les multiples réaménagements de l’espace agricole, les fortes transformations en matière de superficies et productions, la gestion des ressources hydriques entre l’angoisse du déficit et le malaise de l’excès, et le tournant irréversible des employés du secteur agricole

Cet article retrace les fouilles de Sedrata par l’archéologue suisse Marguerite van Berchem entre 1950 et 1955, et ses efforts pour préserver le site et ses fameux décors pariétaux. Le dépouillement des archives textuelles et photographiques inédites de M. Van Berchem, conservées à Genève, éclaire en effet les aspects méconnus de cette entreprise, l’une des plus considérables qu’ait connue l’archéologie islamique en Algérie à l’époque coloniale.
