Taking the al-Ḥārithī tribe from al-Sharqiyya in Oman as an example, the author describes how in the 19th century changing economic circumstances (especially slave and ivory trades) in East Africa eventually led to a hidden social stratification among the Omani Arabs in East Africa. While merchants who had become owners of plantations at Zanzibar consolidated their sources of income, newcomers belonging to the same tribe became plantation overseers and managers for their rich cousins. Those who became caravan leaders into the interior of Africa suffered from continual indebtment because of the rising costs for outfitting a caravan. The established sections of the tribe enjoyed political power and economic supremacy. Among them were religious leaders and learned men, while the continued travelling the new immigrants were forced to in order to pay off their debts led to a low level of education. But the fact that a kind of redistribution took place among the tribal sections as a result of unequal access to wealth, education and political responsibility, though confirmed by actual practices, remains unavowed in discourse and collective conscience; the descent of the nobility is an ideal, unalterable fact upheld by all the tribal sections. Hence the coexistence of two (hidden) levels which do not coincide: one the historical and economic factors which split tribal organization, and the other the collective representations which continue to maintain an egalitarian paradigm of a segmented whole.

Although the majority of Oman's population is Arab and either Ibadi or Sunni Muslim, the country exhibits a wealth of diversity in ethnic groups and native languages. While these other groups are often small in total size, they are represented in such areas as politics and commerce in numbers disproportionate to the weight of their communities and, although distinctive, are more or less woven into the social fabric of the country. Ethnic identity seems likely to decline as the various communities increasingly mix in education, the workplace, residential areas, social functions, the military, and elsewhere. This article provides brief “snapshots” of these groups and assesses their changing status in Omani society.

This article comparatively assesses the relationship of Arabian Peninsula governments to modern Islamic reform movements after the formation of nation-states by the British Government in post-Ottoman Arabia. Over the last half century the region of the Arabian Peninsula has experienced an Islamic awakening that has played an integral role in the process of modernization in Arabian states. There are three aims of this study: 1) to examine the influence of the traditional Islamic schools of theology on re-shaping the identities of Arabian states. 2) to explore the degree to which the governments of the nation states and the prior political establishments informed the contemporary vision of religious reform 3) to consider the impact that the recent wealth of Arabian States, especially the wealth of the GCC countries, has had on the creation of the modern Islamic revival since the discovery of oil. This article argues that medieval Arabic texts that were published in colonial northern Africa constitute as much a part of the history of colonialism and its legacy as that of the medieval centuries in which they were written. Using the publication history of a medieval Ibadi text and its French translations, I demonstrate how texts like it were edited, translated, and published not only for academic purposes, but also as contributions to the production of ‘useful’ colonial knowledge in Algeria. I begin with the first translation, published in 1878 alongside other ethnographic and historical studies funded by the colonial state. I then turn to the second translation, serially published between 1960–2 as its editors abandoned the country at the violent end of the colonial period. Finally, I address the Arabic editions published after independence, which recast it within a nationalist framework. Overall, I argue for the importance of addressing the colonial pasts of medieval texts in northern Africa.
