Discover this 2025 paper in Al Malweah for Archaeological & Historical Studies by ريا مجيد عطية; and, ماجد عجيمي سليم Abstract: In 2017, the Gulf crisis erupted between Qatar on one side, and Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain on the other, following the severing of diplomatic and economic ties with Qatar and accusations of its support for terrorism. However, the Sultanate of Oman took a different stance from its Gulf neighbors. Moreover, Oman adopted a policy of positive neutrality in the crisis, avoiding alignment with any of the conflicting parties. It also sought to play a mediating role between the rivals, calling for dialogue and de- escalation.

The scope of this study is to provide a preliminary analysis of the potential production activity undertaken in Malta during the Arab period. The study aims to collate and analyse the available evidence for the period, such as archaeological, historical, geological, and environmental data, and provide an informed picture of the production activity, including such topics as land-use potential and strategies, economic production, and possible practices of adaptive risk management. The research emphasises the importance of the landscape and environmental context, with Geographic Information System (GIS) tools employed to map and analyse site-level agricultural potential, hydrological resources, and proximity to productive landscapes. Thanks to pottery finds, sites of activity or occupation were identified. These sites include one urban site, two coastal sites, and three rural sites. All sites have access to agriculturally suitable land, but to varying degrees, with the sites in the west and north of the island having the greatest potential within a 1 km radius. All sites are also in the vicinity of hydrological resources. While small-scale irrigation or rainwater harvesting methods may have been used, the absence of large-scale irrigation infrastructure suggests limited necessity for such costly undertakings, possibly due to the population size and varied microenvironments that allowed for diverse food production throughout the year. Animal husbandry and apiculture were also practicable, especially since the island has substantial waste ground, such as karstic land with limited agricultural potential but ideal for grazing. Thus, the production of varied foodstuffs would likely not have impinged on each other. Pottery production has also been identified. The nature of the sedimentary geology of the island, which results in calcium carbonate-rich clay, has been identified as one of the issues that would have impacted pottery production. So too is the availability of fuel, seeing the generally degraded steppe environment and limited tree cover present during the period. What also emerges from the study is a picture of an island that is not an uninhabited or forgotten backwater. However, it seems that the Aghlabid overlordship of the island in the ninth century could have resulted in general neglect of the island’s potential, which is reversed starting in the early tenth century under the Fatimids. The study also highlights the clear and evident need for additional research, especially of a scientific nature, and publication of the archaeology of Arab period Malta. Such efforts would be a boon to our understanding of this often-overlooked period of the history of the Maltese Islands and help further elucidate agricultural practices, trade dynamics, and adaptive strategies during the Arab period in Malta.

"Research on Islamic asceticism frequently highlights practices and ideas described in premodern Islamic literature on renunciation ( zuhd). This study redirects our attention to the Qur'an's ascetic dimension and its reception in the poems and sermons of the Kharijites, an early Islamic group known for extreme piety. It sheds light on the Qur'an's engagement with late antique ascetic ideas, notably regarding scriptural reading and recitation. In their reception of the Qur'an, the Kharijites developed practices of reading and recitation characterized by the interiorization and enactment of scripture. This book offers a new view of the religious culture of the first and early second centuries of Islam through the lens of an understudied group and its attempts to put the Qur'an into practice"-- Provided by publisher

This study aims to highlight the importance of the Mozabite heritage in southern Algeria, in terms of its characteristics and features. This includes tangible heritage such as fortified cities (ksour) and towns with their Islamic architectural style, as well as manifestations of intangible heritage found in the customs and traditions that distinguish the Mozabite community and which it has preserved since ancient times. The study concludes that the Mozabite society has remained cohesive through the customs and traditions of their forefathers, passed down through generations. The community has continued to uphold its spiritual and social values to this day. Additionally, some of the ksour in the M‟zab Valley have maintained their architectural style. However, natural and human factors have begun to threaten the integrity of this tangible heritage, making it necessary for the state to intervene in order to restore and protect these ksour from disappearing, as they represent a shared human heritage.

The literature on the Zanzibar Revolution highlights contested views of events leading up to a short period of violence in 1964. Other studies have followed the paths of those who fled the islands of Zanzibar in the aftermath of the revolution, many of whom lost property to government confiscations. How the confiscations impacted and still inform the relation of their previous owners to Zanzibar, however, has received rather little scholarly attention. This article introduces a dataset of georeferenced property confiscation orders, originally published in the Zanzibar Gazettes between 1964 and 1987. The data contribute to our understanding of the Zanzibar Revolution by showing that the temporal arc of the Revolution was decades long and that property confiscations went beyond urban houses in Stone Town and large plantations. Property confiscations, effected by revolutionary decree, persisted into the 1980s on both Pemba and Unguja islands. By bringing the data into conversation with family histories and previous literature on the aftermath of the revolution, this article illustrates the relevance of Revolutionary era property losses for questions of identity, belonging, desire for restitution, and ongoing development efforts.
