The following subdivisions of the Ibāḍiyya are mentioned: al-Ibāḍiyya al-Wahbiyya (74-76), with a short treatment of their doctrines; al-Ḥārithiyya (76-77); "those who accept obedience not directed towards Allāh" (77); the heresy of Ṣāliḥ b. Kuthayr (77); the heresy of Sufyān (77); al-Ṭarīfiyya (77-8); al-Nukkāriyya (78-79); al-Naffāthiyya (79); al-Khalafiyya (79-80); the political schism of Ibn Masāla al-Ibāḍī of the Berber Hawwāra tribe (80) (see Lewicki 1968); al-ʿUmariyya or al-ʿUmra (80); al-Ḥasaniyya or al-Ḥusayniyya (80-81); al-Farthiyya (81); al-Sakkākiyya (81); al-Ḥafṣiyya (81); al-Yazīdiyya (81-82). The rise of Islam in the Maghrib al-Aqṣā in the eighth and ninth centuries and the simultaneous onset of deep and lasting political, economic, cultural and social upheavals across the region have led historians to focus on Islamisation as the principal cause of this revolution. This article will explore the possible contribution of environmental factors to economic change, and consequently to social and political development. This discussion relates to the field of historical climatology which has been limited in Africa, and especially in the western Maghrib. It focuses on a case study of the caravan city of Sijilmāsa (Morocco) and argues that an important climate oscillation between the eighth and ninth centuries may have been a decisive factor in its foundation. Finally, it suggests that this climate fluctuation may have been a driving factor in the urbanisation that the Maghrib al-Aqṣā experienced more widely in this period.

Cuperly discusses the subjects treated in the ʿAqīda (listed on p. 24-25), making a comparison i.a. with the Muqaddimat al-Tawḥīd of Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar b. Jamīʿ.

the discovery of an early Muslim drahm reveals the name legend of a previously unknown ruler. The legend may be read as ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. MDWL? This ruler struck the coin in Iṣṭakhr in 61 H./680-81 during the second Fitna. Questions, nevertheless, surround his identity and political loyalties.
