كتاب "الأنساب" للعوتبي إشكالات في النسبة والتأليف

يتناول البحث بالنقد والتحليل إشكالية نسبة كتاب "الأنساب" إلى سلمة بن مسلم العوتبي الصحاري، وذلك بدراسة أسلوب المؤلف ومنهجه التاريخي وميوله الدينية والوطنية، إضافة إلى محاولة معرفة الفترة الزمنية التي كتب فيها الكتاب بمناقشة بعض النصوص والمقاطع التي وردت فيها أسماء أعلام تاريخية أو حوادث مهمة كانت قريبة من عهد مؤلف الكتاب، ويتطرق البحث إلي بعض الأحداث التاريخية التي شهدتها عمان في أواخر القرن الثالث الهجري - التاسع الميلادي، وإلى أثرها في شخصية مؤلف "الأنساب"، وموقفه الحيادي في عرضه لهذه الأحداث ولأخرى وقعت في عمان، مما يتناقض كليا مع المنهج والأسلوب في كتاب "الضياء" المنسوب للعوتبي أيضا. كذلك يستعرض البحث المادة التاريخية لكتاب "الأنساب" وأهميتها العلمية كما يستعرض المصادر المختلفة التي اعتمد عليها المؤلف وأورد كثيرا منها في كتابه، وقد خلص البحث إلى تأكيد أهمية إعادة دراسة كتاب "الأنساب" وتحقيقه وفق منهج علمي رصين، وإلى ضرورة مقارنة مادته التاريخية بالمصادر الماثلة وبخاصة العمانية منها، بغية إبراز الأهمية العلمية لمصادر تاريخ عمان والتوصل إلى معرفة تفاصيل أكثر عن هذه المصادر وعن مؤلفيها. This is a critical and analytical study of the well-known book Al- Ansab, commonly attributed to Al Awtabi. The paper deals with the author’s style, his methods, and his religious inclinations, as well as his Omani connections. The study also attempts to place Al-Ansab in a more precise historical context according to the references to known events and characters. The civil war which broke out in Oman towards the end of the third century AH / ninth century AD appears to have influenced the author of Al-Ansab, although his attitude towards these tumultuous events is surprisingly neutral and objective. This approach is markedly different to that shown in Al-Dhiya, which is also attributed to Al-Awtabi, but is characterised by its religious fervour and prejudice, unlike the level-headed, balanced and objective tone and outlook of Al-Ansab. The study also covers the historical contents of Al-Ansab and their significance as well as a review of the different sources referred to or quoted from by the author. The conclusion draws attention to the importance of Al-Ansab and the necessity of it being edited and published with more rigorous standards than those currently available in the published edition. It is also important to compare and contrast the historical material of the book with other Omani sources in order to reach a better understanding of the history of the region during this period.

Paper Routes: Inscribing Islamic Law across the Nineteenth-Century Western Indian Ocean

Sometime during the middle of the nineteenth century, a correspondent from the interior of Oman wrote to the jurist Sa‘id bin Khalfan Al-Khalili (c. 1811–70) with an observation: “The Mazru‘is have wealth on the Swahili coast [al-Sawāḥil] and wealth in Oman.” This in itself was no surprise: the Mazru‘is, along with scores of other Arab clans, included a branch that had long since established its political authority in Mombasa, on the coast of what is now Kenya, but lately, the correspondent suggested, things had been changing. Members of the Mombasa Mazru‘is were now coming to Oman armed with wakalas (powers of attorney) from unknown scribes, for the sale of their familial properties in their ancestral homeland. “He [the Mazru‘i] sold what God likes from these properties and took the value… and the yield was separated from the property owners.” The people's acquiescence to the state of affairs was of particular surprise to the questioner. Days, months, and years went by, he noted, and the property owners (arbāb al-amwāl) did not seem the least bit interested in changing the system, “and the people, as you well know, come and go via this sea, from Oman to the Swahili coast, with confidence that they know [bi-ḥukm al-iṭma'ināna annahum ‘alamū].”

Development and progress of the fleet and the navy in Oman during the reign of Sultan Said bin sultan from 1804 to 1856. It had second level in Arab Gulf and Indian Ocean during the first half of nineteenth century. The fleet of Oman in this time became after British fleet. Several reasons were behind the development of Omani fleet - First : The aim of Sultan Said was to built a large navy yard in Arab Gulf and Indian Ocean to encourage him -to made many ships factories. - Second: Arab Gulf and Indian Ocean within the reign of Sultan Said wittinsed the confilicts and wars between different forces it drived Sultan Said to built agood and strong navy. - Third The main aim of Oman during the reign of Sultan Said was to protect the trade of Oman and its trad relations. - Fourth: sultan said was desire to open some arias and he wanted to add many parts to his country as happened as with Africa East (zanzibar). Moreover this research consists of an introduction two sections and conclusion depending on different documents and sources in Arabic and English

Djenne et le Ghana : deux modeles sociaux, et la question du commerce trans-saharien

This paper puts under scrutiny the alleged link between the Trans-Saharian Arabo-Berber trade and the development of complex polities such as the Ghana empire in the West African Sahel. When did Ghana come into existence? As evidence is lacking, the city of Djenne (Jenne) could provide some clues. Meanwhile, the peculiar urbanism of Djenne-Djeno (old Jenne) can be understood as depicting alternative, auto-organizing social relations in the Inland Niger Delta. Furthermore, during the first millennium before and the first millennium after common era, the distinctive «urban cluster» pattern of Djenne-Djeno or Dia in the Macina can be found elsewhere along the Niger Bend and as far downstream as Bentia-Kukiya. Climatic changes affecting the Sahara presumably induced a common Soninke origin for Djenne-Djeno and for the Ghana polity, in both cases via the Neolithic culture of Tichitt. Based on this and on the Wagadu myth of the snake and the rain-maker, some features of Ghana can be underlined. Specifically, the level of economical interactions clearly shows that internal West African networks dealing with copper, salt, stones and staples predated the Trans-Saharian links with the Islamic world, leading to the conclusion that the so-called Arabic stimulus explanation can be dismissed. Finally, the articulation between the two towns of Djenne is addressed.

The sixteenth century is the time when two great states representing two great civilizations (Islamic and Western) reached their apex on the historical scene. In this century the Ottoman state saw itself as the most powerful state and protector of the Islamic world whereas Catholic Spain regarded itself as the defender of the West and of Christianity. Impelled by religious, military and economic motives these two states confronted each other in order to obtain the overlordship of the geopolitically crucial region of Tunisia in the Central Mediterranean. In the sixteenth century Tunisia gained importance for the Ottomans as a place that needed to be conquered for two reasons: it was situated at the connecting point with Algeria, which was their most important province in Northern Africa; and it was found in a place that controlled the trade routes in the Mediterranean. By contrast, the Spanish state considered it to be of vital importance for the protection of its garrisons in Northern Africa and for the security of its lands in Southern Italy.
