"Goddesses of Flesh and Metal"

In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Tunisian Jewish female body was subjected to a dramatic fattening process in preparation for marriage. Immediately following the girl’s engagement, her body became the focus of an intense transformative regimen aimed at achieving the aesthetic ideals of dramatic weight gain and “shining and whitening” of the skin. This paper offers a critical reading of the representation of the female body in postcards and travelogues, in descriptions written by members of the Tunisian Jewish community, and in interviews conducted with group members now living in Israel. The meeting of these voices called for a multidimensional examination of central themes including the ideal female body, its boundaries, and transgressions of those boundaries; mechanisms of control; and the complex relationships between honor and shame and between attraction and repulsion. Hence, the full, rounded bodies of Tunisian Jewish brides were sites of transformation where these multiple meanings came together in complex and at times contrasting ways.

Geophysical Studies of North African Cenozoic Volcanic Areas: III. Garian, Libya

Paleomagnetic and K/Ar whole rock absolute age data are described for material from the Garian area of Libya, centered at 13°E, 32°N. Within-unit cleaned paleomagnetic directions from the essentially unaltered lavas are very well defined and can almost certainly be taken as reliable measurements of the geomagnetic field direction during the initial cooling of each flow. However, the distributions of mean direction, from which the effect of repeated sampling of the field at one time has been removed, does not suggest that a reversing axial dipole field has been recorded in a representative manner. Both N and R groups of directions are azimuthally elongated, and the average poles for the N and R groups differ by 21°, or four times the 95% level uncertainty for each average pole. A number of possible physical explanations for the paleomagnetic results are discussed. The conventional overall average pole at 88°N, 123°E, δp: 3°, δm: 7 °does not differ significantly from the geographic pole, a result which agrees closely with that of Schult and Soffel (1973). However, the value of these overall average poles in estimating absolute plate motion must await an understanding of the sources of the asymmetries in the paleomagnetic data.

Kumar concludes that the Ibāḍī revivalist movement was essentially a reaction to Wahhābī pressures and he postulates a quite different subsequent history for Oman had Britain chosen to forego Sultan Saʿīd’s successors (Busch 1967, 56 note 16).

Authority Beyond State and Tribe in the Early Medieval Maghrib: The Impact of Climate on the Economic, Social and Political Reorganisation of the Maghrib al-Aqṣā in the Eighth–Ninth Centuries: The Case of Sijilmāsa (Morocco)

The rise of Islam in the Maghrib al-Aqṣā in the eighth and ninth centuries and the simultaneous onset of deep and lasting political, economic, cultural and social upheavals across the region have led historians to focus on Islamisation as the principal cause of this revolution. This article will explore the possible contribution of environmental factors to economic change, and consequently to social and political development. This discussion relates to the field of historical climatology which has been limited in Africa, and especially in the western Maghrib. It focuses on a case study of the caravan city of Sijilmāsa (Morocco) and argues that an important climate oscillation between the eighth and ninth centuries may have been a decisive factor in its foundation. Finally, it suggests that this climate fluctuation may have been a driving factor in the urbanisation that the Maghrib al-Aqṣā experienced more widely in this period.

Democracy and youth in the Middle East: Islam, tribalism and the rentier state in Oman

"The leaders of the oil-rich rentier states of the Middle East, and in particular in the Gulf, have hitherto often predicated their legitimacy on a tacit social contract with their (much poorer) populations. This social contract consists of little or no direct taxation, with some sort of subsidised living. But the casualty of this tacit agreement is often political participation, an issue which has come to the forefront in the Middle East following the 'Arab Spring' of 2011. Here, Sulaiman Al-Farsi looks at the impact the rentier nature of the Gulf States has on political participation, focusing on the nexus between tribe, religion and a new generation of young, highly educated citizens that is present in Oman. Regionalizing Oman: Political, Economic and Social Dynamics

This volume addresses the historical structures and current dynamics of Oman's regionalization processes and their political, economic and social dimensions. It is based on an interdisciplinary and trans-regional dialogue between scholars from different social sciences and area studies such as political science, economics, management, economic and social geography, history, social anthropology and linguistics as well as Middle East/West Asian, gulf and African studies, and develops four major axes of research: - Oman's integration into global and regional flows of goods, capital, people and ideas; - The multi-scaled political negotiation of such integration (or disintegration) processes; - Consequences of suchlike processes and forms of regionalization for (translocal) actors; - Ideas and strategic communication of regional belonging and the constitution of regions. Each chapter deals with one or more of these issues. Part I deals with concepts of regionalisation and region-building and presents different approaches that accentuate certain dimensions of these processes and come from different disciplinary backgrounds. Part II focuses on the translocal, transnational and (trans)regional movement of people, their practices and imaginations, be they contemporary labour in- and out-migrants, returnees from Eastern Africa or nomadic tribal members. Part III takes a closer look particularly at economic issues and regionalisation processes that are mainly based on multiple trade links, regional development policies or politics of regionalism. Part IV analyses political and socio-cultural issues in regional and global perspectives
