Many of the events recorded pertain to exchanges and visits between leading notables and merchants of Oman and the Gulf and their relations to the Sultan of Muscat and Oman.

This file contains correspondence related to the maintenance and condition of the three Christian (or European) cemeteries in Muscat. The majority of the correspondence in the file is internal correspondence between British officials, but the file also contains correspondence between the Political Agency in Muscat and external entities including a contractor in India (concerning the purchase of chain for use as railing in a cemetery); Dirk Dykstra of the American Mission in Muscat; and the Ministry [naẓārah] of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman. The correspondence with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs relates to a stolen tombstone being used as flooring in a residence near Matrah, two of these letters are in Arabic (accompanied by English translations). In addition to correspondence, the file contains a plan of the Catholic Cemetery near the American Mission in Muscat (folio 16).

A memorandum explaining that Lord Canning, Viceroy and Governor General of India, had arbitrated between the two sons of Sultan Syud Saeed [Sayyid Sa‘īd bin Sulṭān Āl Bū Sa‘īd]upon his death. The two sons agreed the division of their inheritance between them as Sultans of Zanzibar and Muscat respectively, and the memorandum reproduces an Anglo-French declaration recognising the independence of the two sultans. The memorandum goes on to give the opinion of Sir E C Ross, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, regarding how Gwadar had originally fallen under the dominions of Muscat. The memorandum was written by Richard William Brant, Foreign Office.

This file contains a selection of correspondence, extracts and reports regarding the involvement of British subjects from the Princely State of Kutch [Cutch] in the slave trade in Zanzibar and attempts by the British Government to end this involvement. Much of the correspondence is from Britain's Political Agent in Zanzibar, Henry Adrian Churchill and Britain's Political Agent in Kutch, Major Alexander Young Shortt. This includes translated copies of correspondence between Churchill and the Sultan of Zanzibar, Seyd [Sayyid] Majid bin Said. On folio 128, the file contains a proclamation issued by the ruler of Kutch, the Maharaja Dhiraj Mirza Maha Rao Shree Praguruljee, that warns his subjects in Kutch of the penalties of being engaged in the slave trade in general and specifically in Zanzibar.

A printed memorandum, written by Adolphus Warburton Moore, Assistant Secretary of the Political and Secret Department of the India Office, 27 September 1876. The memorandum discusses the views of Henry Cadogan Rothery on whether the Imperial Government had to contribute to the payment of an annual subsidy to the Sultan of Muscat (as compensation for the abandonment of his claims upon Zanzibar) and of the expenses of the Agency and Consulate at Zanzibar, made by the India Office from 1870. Rothery writes that, because the Agent at Zanzibar was also acting as Judge of the Vice Admiralty Court in the Trial of the Slave Trade cases, it was the duty of the Imperial Government to contribute towards these expences.

A printed report, written by a Committee formed by Louis Mallet, Henry Cadogan Rothery and William Henry Wylde, 8 December 1876. The Committee was nominated by H M's Treasury, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and the Secretary of State for India, to determine whether the Imperial Government had to contribute to the payment of an annual subsidy to the Sultan of Muscat (as compensation for the abandonment of his claims upon Zanzibar) and of the expenses of the Agency and Consulate at Zanzibar, which had been paid by the India Office since 1870. The committee acknowledges that in 1873 it was agreed that these payments should be divided between Imperial and Indian Government, hence the Imperial Government had to compensate the India Office for the payments made in the years 1873-1877. The report includes a summary of payments made to the Sultan of Muscat between May 1873 and February 1877, expenses for the British Agency and Consulate General at Zanzibar for the period 1872-1877, and a proposed budget estimate for the future, to be equally divided between Imperial and Indian Government. Two declarations follow the report, from two comissioners in disagreement with the report.

A printed memorandum, written by Adolphus Warburton Moore, Assistant Secretary of the Political and Secret Department of the India Office, 17 August 1876. The first part of the document is a claim of expenses for an annual subsidy of 40,000 crowns from the Sultan of Zanzibar to the Sultan of Muscat as compensation for the abandonment of his claims upon Zanzibar, which was paid by the Political Agent at Muscat for the period 1870-1877, including a summary of payments made between May 1873 and February 1877. The second part of the document contains a claim for the expenses of the Agency and Consulate at Zanzibar, including: salary of Political Agent, Second Assistant and interpreters, furlough allowances and charge for interest on Government buildings.

Some seem to be written independently, others in response to earlier memoranda. All documents cover some or all of the following matters: The $40,000 annual subsidy that Muscat receives from Zanzibar; The murder of Thuwaynī bin Sa‘īd Āl Sa‘īd, Sultan of Muscat, by his son, Sālim bin Thuwaynī Āl Sa‘īd, who subsequently made himself Sultan; The East African slave trade; Persia's ambitions for a naval presence in the Persian Gulf; Measures to police the Gulf; The lease of Bandar Abbas from Persia by Muscat; How the region should be administered: to what authority - Foreign Office or Government of India - are the various offices responsible to.
